On a pretty good SatAM site, Mike had revealed how the storylines (for SatAM and Archie) are in fact tied to Sonic Team.

It appears that SatAM and Archie were a joint collaboration between SoA, DiC and Sonic Team.

Key word: Sonic Team.

together, they made a world, a storyline, profiles and basically the foundational story. So, Archie and SatAM are both in a sense Sonic Team universes. Thus purists still have no reason to leap for joy.


Another pet peeve of mine:

"Mina is copywritten to Archie"

"Sally is copywritten to DiC"

"Amy/Sonic/Knuckles is copywritten to Sega"


No offense to people who do this, but initially this was done to establish some sort of rank amongst characters. Which was closest to being a Sega character, and I find it quite stupid. Ask any Archie writer if they'll take your fanfic or comic and display it and they'll tell you no.

Why? Because Sega would take rights to it all. ANY character in the comics for instance have rights taken to Sega. The writers answer to these guys, and the characters are theirs. Sally, Mina and any other non game character have their copyrights to SEGA, not their comic's publishing company.

Blah, quickly typed something in my head up. Its sort of funny. How people segregate characters and such. Much like racism and stuff. I suppose if it can happen with cartoons, people have no reason to wonder how mankind finds their way in doing it in real life.

I'm sure I'm not, but has anyone gone to look at a fanfiction, be it on fanfiction.net, or some other website... and found everything extremely OOC amonst the characters? Especially with... you guessed it pairing fics.

Whether its X-men's Jean grey acting like a cold hearted individual who wants to leech on poor Rouge, or Sonic the hedgehog's Amy Rose turning into the poor, abused, sympathetic character, there's probably NO comic, game, or work that doesn't meet such an annoying trend of writing.

fanfictions are fun, fanfictions are cool. They can be captivating works of art without illustrations, the words and descriptions are the brush, and the plot and characterizations. They allow one to use their artistic lisences to tell a story... a great concept, that I think people in general are abusing.

I do not "hate" the people who do this, I do not have a problem with anyone's character content, today, I'm merely going to focus on the fics, on my favorite comic/cartoon/blah blah blah...Sonic.

Now, to be frank, I don't know why I put up with Sonic games, Final Fantasy gives a lot more worth to the cash you chuck out for these games. Sonic Heroes in my mind was a reguritated peice with same levels, gameplay, stale plot and characters who don't do the slightest developing, and anyone wonder why Knux left the island to adventure?


Okay, so now we have clear that even though I'm a Sonic fan, I have to admit his games aren't the best, and I'm not even a fan of him because of his games.

When I go into the fanfiction.net category for Sonic, I usually end up slapping my forehead thinking "why did I waste my time?" Hope I suppose. So to continue, lets make clear what the heck I find wrong with Sonic fanfictions.

The first thing is, is that they can't decide what continuity they want to write a fic on. They slap in characters without research, or any second thoughts, confusing the reader. If you are writing these fics for yourself, don't make them public folks, if you are giving them to the public for us to read, do us a favor and at least help us understand what the heck you are talking about. Are you reffering to the comics? show? STI games? Sonic Team games? Sonic X? Its important to make a good note in specifying this so whe know how the character is supposed to behave, as the characters can and have behaved differently in different continuities.

Amy Rose oriented, or Sonic/Amy fanfictions

Now normally, these fics take the cake for OOCness.

First of all, how come Amy wants to go on an adventure. Her reasons for going usually consist of trying to get Sonic to marry her, in the end she is dragged into an adventure. Amy KNOWS this is how it goes, she's approved of this admitting it in adventure. She knows by following Sonic around adventures are bound to happen. She doesn't have enough self worth to look to herself for a good time, Sonic must define it for her, so a solo story would be hard to come by unless Amy finding her own self worth was developed prior. The problem is just that: it isn't. So its OOC, to conviently change characterizations with NO developments.

An implied excuse within the writing is that Amy says she'll get Sonic to respect her. Yes, but Sonic adventure was years ago, we have a couple more games out to expand on what Amy means. She is more aggressive in her approach to getting Sonic. In SA, her little fantasy of Sonic turned into a full blown "marry me" craze that made the Sonic chasing more renown. Has she done much in Sonic's presence in terms of fighting and aiding, no. She's become more bold and aggressive towards everyone in regards to her "romance" with Sonic so that they respect it. That's that. The end. At least IMO.

So now that people know why these abrupt "kick butt to impress the readers/Sonic OOC fics" annoy me a bit, lets go on to SonAmy romance.In the cast, it usually consists of Sonic, Tails, Rouge, Amy, Mina, Shadow and princess Sally.

Tails: The "boy's" best friend.

In SonAmy fics, Tails tends to be the boy who says "Stop being macho Sonic! You love Amy don't you?" He's the close friend who suspects Sonic loves her, support her with him, and wants to pry it out of Sonic.

Again, this is OOC, please play your games.


He approves of Sonic/Amy, he's happy with Amy's approach and wants her with Sonic.

Why oh why then did he try to tell Amy he doesn't want to prepare for a future with her through Emerl in battle? Why oh why was he annoyed in SA2 when she went to go the base for her "hero Sonic!"

he "knows" Sonic's macho and really loves Amy. In Battle when Sonic runs off, he's not defending Amy. He's not saying "hey Sonic stop acting so evasive and admit you want her" no he's literally trying to squash Amy's fantasy of her and Sonic, and gets slapped with intimidation.

in the comics, Tails doesn't even KNOW much about Amy's crush towards Sonic. her growth spurt didn't make immediate rushes to Sonic, she is oriented on getting him to respect her as a freedom fighter, but then again she wants that from everyone, and in the end Sonic/Amy is portrayed as a brother/sister bond, thats what Gabrie said in a Sonic Gram.

Oh I can see it now "screw Sally and Mina Sonic, you are better with an incest relationship with your sister equivalent!"

ha ha...no.

NEXT!

Rouge: The girl's best friend.

In the fics that try handling the games, angsty Amy needs a companion. Cheerleader Rouge. Cheerleader Rouge encourages angsty Amy that indeed Sonic loves her and that he's just being stubborn. Anyone who played Heroes would know, that is NOT the case with Rouge. To each their own opinion, but Rouge and Amy first off are not "pals" they were at each other's throats in Battle, and Rouge thinks Amy is too pushy, and drives Sonic away. Does that sound like cheerleading? No. They aren't friends and Rouge does not support Amy.

Knuckles: Usually the boyfriend of Rouge. Lets just toss out the fact they are rivals who only come together because of the emerald, no, they are passionate lovers. When an adventure doesn't involve the emerald, Rouge does not seek Knux's company. I don't mind Knux/Rouge, but its not a passionate hot and heavy romance. Many SonAmy fics potray it as such to make Sonic envious, so that he'd want to be with Amy. That, and/or, Knuckles frowns upon how he treats Amy, when he really doesn't seem to care.

Mina Mongoose: Mina in fics that want a more Archie twist, ends up being Amy's friend and comfort zone. Even when she has Techno and Ebony. Amy and Mina haven't even really had an official get together/meeting in the comic. Them being best friends for unexplained reason is fairly odd. Her encouraging Amy for Sonic when she's already considered Sonic wanted Sally in 123 is also a bit odd to me as well. Why would she encourage the kid sister figure when she is under the assumption Sonic is happier with princess Sally?

Shadow: Mina's convnient love interest whom she's never even met before. How does Shadow open up to Mina? Why? None of these questions are answered, she's just plopped with him and we're expected to understand.

We don't.


Sally: The antagonist. She rains on Amy's parade, is a bully, is rude, steals poor Sonic, and hates Amy because of the competition.


....First one must ask... WHAT competition?!

In Archie comics, Sally has never voiced any idea that Sonic has any interest in Amy. If he holds no interest, why would she feel threatened? Sonic's not going to make Sally worry because Sonic loves her like a sister, and thus isn't going to romance her. Also, the "OMG Sally stole Sonic from Amy!" No one can steal something from you that you didn't have to begin with.


Sonic: Amy's love interest.

Poor poor Sonic. He is potrayed as "secretly wanting to commit to Amy but never admitting it." See, in the comic he loves Amy like a sister, so no, he doesn't want THAT sort of commitment. In the games and Sonic X, Sonic would never give up his adventures to have a more settled lifestyle that Amy Rose wants. He'd never commit to he needs as such. They'd never be beyond friends because Naka's already gone into account on how Amy will continue to persue Sonic with a desire to have a commitment with him he doesn't want. So pairing Sonic/Amy goes against the "Amy is always supposed to chase" while Sonic is "never to settle and have kids."



Amy: The angstified girlie who does no wrong. In the fics, sometimes she stops and thinks about "gee maybe chasing Sonic is wrong, he hates me, I'm not chasing anymore because its for the best."

Eh...no. People she's not Mina the Mongoose. This girl chases to win, whether Sonic says "no" or not. Naka in his interveiw made it specifically clear, Amy is meant to "chase" Sonic. Always. Key word. Remember it. So its out of character for her to suddenly want to stop because she's considering his feelings out of love. Mainly because Amy's posessive and is bent on having him, always chasing and thus she'll always fail.

When she chases, she sometimes gets Sonic to stop and they date, he admits his love for her....and why? Why does Sonic for no developed reason get so charmed by Amy Rose he'd stop his occassional running from her, and agree to dating when he just said no in SAdv 3. Again the chain of events are OOC. If you want a fiction depicting the relations between the characters Sonic and Amy, fine but please do it in character. to me its an eyesore when I see people write them OOC because of how they say Japanese obsessed fans who only want to look at Amy being with Sonic because SoJ made the game she starred in, Sonic CD. Neglecting the fact SoJ developers (Sonic Team) collaborated with SoA to make the storylines we know of today as Archie and SatAM. Whatever Amy...whatever...

The fics don't like to touch on the flaws of the relations. Amy is too persistant. Chases, and doesn't respect Sonic not wanting to commit to much outside adventure. Sonic doesn't care about Amy's desires for a loving commitment In the end it creates an infinite game of cat and mouse in which many don't seemingly understand.

Think I'm done? I'm really not.

Sonic/Sally: Most mature/wonderful couple evar!!1123634"

In fanfiction that I've read, they have a mature relationship. One of affections, strong bonds, and look like they could soon be married. I watch SatAM and read Archie comics and shake my head. Another attempt at making a flawless romance. Unangsitfied, but it stripped of its flaws as well.

In SatAM, where is the childish banter that reflects the bits and peices of immaturity in Sonic and Sally's character? To be honest I wasn't detracted by them having immaturity through their banter in the slightest. It showed that despite what all the freedom fighters went through they could still hold on to be somewhat jovial. And yet, it was still immature, but its nothing many fics want to touch on. Many fics also don't touch on how Sally has used guys in both the comic and cartoon to get Sonic's attention so that he can conform to what she desires.

Finally, their lifestyles create flaws the "perfect pairing" writers don't wish to touch on. Where is Sonic and Sally's dispute over how to run their lives? Sally wants Sonic in the palace to be at her side, Sonic wants to rule. Where is this incorporated in new Archie fics? Where are basic flaws in these fics at all?

I also don't like how SOME of them have potrayed Mina. A SonAmy pincess Sally equivalent. an evil instigator who seeks to make them unhappy by runing their relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend. First off... what relationship? They were never together when Mina was around. And Mina reacted by nearly dying so Sal could be with Sonic when she felt Sonic loved her. Does that sound like an evil instigator who wants to tear apart a pairing? Uhm...no.

Lastly:

Tails/Cream.

Already made a mini rant about Knux/Rouge, so I won't bother to repeat myself on that. But these two aren't even reaching puberty and are already passionately attracted to one another? Puppy love isn't "OMG MARRY ME WE'R SOUL MATS YAY!" If people want to develop Cream and Tails, please develop common interest first and leave it G-rated. They're only 8 and 6...and some fanfiction writers really haven't caught on to that if you know what I mean.

Lately I've been handed these questions such as "OMG why do you like Mina" or "Sally ROX" or "Amy's c00l!"

Save it, I don't care, I don't like the comic interpretation of Sally. You can go to a board and talk about loving Sally Acorn or Amy Rose, but that's it. I'm so sick and tired of people trying to convert me into debating on behalf of their girl. Its not happenin'. For now, Mina's the one I choose to support, not Sally, not Amy.

And due to sooo many people wanting to know WHY I don't think Sally or Amy are hot for Sonic I'll just say my peice here. Please ignore this journal if you can't bear reading someone else's opinion:

Sally: I don't support her with Sonic, in SatAM nor Archie. Some people need to get over it. I'm not going to change my opinion anytime soon, if ever, so find someone else to rant for your "precious" princess.


I don't like Sonic/Sally in SatAM because Sally was consumed on trying to make him someone she could love, or acting in a way that didn't consider his feelings (trying to make Sonic be more of a gentlemen by using Griff? Not caring about how upset he'd feel?, If Sally truly loved Sonic, why have the urge to morph him into something else if she appreciated who he was already? Why make him jealous if she's supposed to be the loving girl who cares about how he feels? Then there's Sonic who basically just ran off on missions, not caring about the danger as much as he should if at all, and thus not caring about how Sally could feel based on his actions. Lets also touch on Antoine, whom competed with Sonic for Sally. When Sally points out she isn't comitted to Sonic sometime in the continuity of the show, he runs off sulking and upset. Not considering Sally's happiness when the frustration over his rivalry with Ant blows up in her face, no happiness considered by respecting Sally's desicion, just an immature reaction that showed his interest was in having the "prized" princess of the show, not to make a serious commitment in making her happy, and vice versa. They need not have a committed relationship to one another, so they need not be together. They are obviously not but so loving and committed to each other's needs. Can they cheer each other up and stuff? Certainly, but the way the relationship was handled makes me feel they weren't committed to one another's needs. Its one thing to do something, its another to be comitted to it. The way it was handled made me feel the good times they shared were merely something to advance their own interests in having one another. I like SatAM Sally, don't get me wrong, but I just don't think Sonic's right for her.

In Archie, its the same problem in regards to the relationship. Sonic wants to run off on adventure, Sally wants to rule, neither of them comitted to each other's needs for comprimise to happen. Not only that but in my mind, Sally is evidently posessive of Sonic, and he is posessive of her. When Sally thought she lost Sonic to Mina, she was a cold, biting, resentful brat. She didn't at all consider how he felt, and didn't consider his happiness. Instead Sally ignored, evaded, and tried cutting Sonic out of a mission. That showes her desire to have Sonic, and not see him happy. Why? Because she's warm to Sonic when she can have him, but once she can't most desire to persue him with an attractive attitude and mindset is gone. for the longest time, Sally had always thought she could have Sonic, as in: SHE'D be the girl he'd end up with if anyone. So, until the love triangle she would always be open to him. Once her ideology of having him is taken, all is out the window and she is a cold, biting brat.

Need more?

Go look at 134 and 138. Princess Pants is trying to force Sonic into staying in the palace and not fight, so she can have someone to rule at her side and to protect their future as a couple. In the end she abuses him when he refuses, to resume his duty for the better of the people. Her desire to ensure she has Sonic cuts away at thinking about what could make him happy. An example of trying to make sure she can "have" Sonic, without considering what makes him happy/what he wants. Sure she can be kind to Sonic, but you have to know the motive behind it. The idea she can do this to get Sonic, not "merely to make him happy." That's posession to me, not love. As the focus is "having" the charachter, not being committed to their happiness and at the very least consdiering comprimise.

So now I probably have a dozen Amy fans giggling in their seats. Well you can stop too because I'm not a Sonamy fan either.

Amy runs in pursuit of Sonic because he's her hero, and such. She wants to force him into marrying her and comitting. He has made it clear his answer is no, but she continues.

"but deep down he cares right?"

Your opinion, but even if that is true, he hasn't admitted such to Amy. So if Amy were the loving girl who cared for Sonic's happiness over her own selfish desires to have him, wouldn't she abide by what she at the very least "thinks" he wants? What she "thinks" would make her happy based on what he's verbally expressed to her? Which would mean "leave him alone" since that is what he has indicated to be what he wants, whether or not a relationship to Amy is actually something he wants. As "no marriage" is all she's been told, so I'd expect her to at least consider his words and use what she "thinks" she knows to make him happy.

Though, being she doesn't, does that not scream posession as well? The desire to do things only to "get" Sonic while not caring about how he's actually feeling? Sonic doesn't appear happy when Amy's chasing him, fighting him, etc in order to be forced into a committed relationship. But she persues because she is determined to make Sonic "her's" as she says in Heroes. To me its the same posession I see in Sally. I repeat: In Sonic Team, Amy only cares about making Sonic her's, not what is in his best interest. Sonic doesn't care about Amy Rose romantically either. Since when is he comitted to her wants? He hasn't even considered what would make her happy : Marriage and kids. So I don't find what is between them as love either.

A manuel can say what it likes, but some official sites say he doesn't want her, others say he might have secret feelings. Being that the interpretations of Sonic's feelings are so widespread, I go by what I see, and I don't see much "love" between Sonic and Amy Rose.

Then we have Sonic X, which SonAmy fans constantly talk about to reiterate the "love" between Sonic and Amy.

Yuji Naka: There will be hardly be any chance, I bet. Amy will continue to pursue Sonic all the time, but Sonic will not ever get married. I think so, because I cannot picture the image of Sonic that he is married and has his children! Also, I feel it is a more Amy's style to always chase Sonic.

Sonic says he "loves" Amy, but lets get serious, IMO he doesn't. He isn't that seriously comitted to Amy's feelings to ever take it that deep in any noted continuity Naka has regarded. Amy will always want this commitment with Sonic, but no matter what he actually tells this twelve year old, in reality his heart isn't comitted to her and her wants for a married life and a family, He isn't that committed to Amy's feelings to comprimise it, so I doubt it'd get far.


With Mina its something fairly different. She took the bullet for Sally in issue 123. A posessive girl could easily take the bullet for Sonic, because he has to be alive in order to feel the joy of having him. Some may be so extreme as to let themselves die before not
having him. With Mina its somewhat different. Our Mongoose took the bullet for SALLY, not Sonic, so there's not real arguement for posession here. When she saw Sonic and Sally kissing, she felt Sonic would never care about her like he does Sally. In short, she doesn't feel confident in having Sonic. She still took the bullet for Sally. Instead of letting her head get blown to peices, Mina risked her life to save the only obstacle in her way. Why? because Mina is more oriented in seeing Sonic happy. She doesn't HAVE to have Sonic, because that's not her motivation for treating him how she does. Her motivation is to see him happy, having him is not an issue because she loves his charachter that much.

As for Sonic, I think he holds interest in Mina as well. In Sonic #111, when Tails mentioned "girlfriend" not only did Sally pop up in his mind, but so did Mina the Mongoose, so we know at the very least Sonic has a romantic interest in Mina. There is then the question is he comitted to Mina's needs as an individual. The answer is yes. When Mina was hurt when her mother turned into a bot, Sonic was there, when they met up again in the 90s Sonic helped her cope yet again. In 123, he was there for Mina. When Mina's wanted help on training her speed, or had talent, he thought of her best interest and gave out his hand, when Mina's needs have come into question, Sonic has taken the time to be there, without asking for ANYTHING in return. Unlike Sally, whom he expects to be wooed, Sonic hasn't expected anything of the sort from Mina, rather the intent has been to make her happy. Even if Sonic himself was a little screwed up in the romance department, I'd still pick Mina, because she has realized he isn't ready to "marry" and be with her, and has loved his character anyway. Remember, being with Mina isn't a "need" to her, there's thus no need for Sonic to tend to it. Its a "want" but its not emphasized as a necessity.



And now to rebut some stuff I see from messageboards:

OMG how could you like Mina, the comics have intended Sonic and Sally to be together from the get-go!

First of all, even if this was true, you'd have to understand things change. Just as a person may have plans to become a doctor, they can easily end up deciding to change their profession to be something like a lawyer. Intentions are inconstant.

For those who need further convincing to ditch this pathetic ideology....

A quote from Ken (a couple years old) Sonic was not built on the idea that him and Sally were this meant to be couple, that Mina crashed in. As the matter of fact, Sally was meant to be that girl Sonic has the "fun" with some of the time, but in the end, it was more true to the character Archie set for him that he go for someone else, Sonic and Sally weren't built on the idea they were "meant to be" Mina didn't rain on anyone's parade, as there was never was one. Thus I'm sick of the "OMG SAL CAME FIRST!" Crap, because in the end...so what? What came first was Sonic's take on girl's and that initial take was to date another girl besides Sally, despite what sparks hit the wood. Throughout early freedom fighting he was out and about with Tatiana, a former love interest to Antoine. But Amy's the official love interest

First of all, I'm not those kinds of people who think Sonic Team games are the only official verse. Even if we were to apply the "anything Sonic Team is cannon" you'd have to rule in the fact Sonic Team helped make the storylines and profiles for the characters that would be pit in the Archie/SatAM storyline, and there its currently Sally and Mina that are the gals, Amy's not even much competition. Anyway, for those of you who must be so insistant on the games, I'll quote this again:

Sonic and Sally have known each other since childhood

And I've known my sisters since birth, that doesn't mean I'm going to be having some lesbian incest relationship with them okay? I really don't care if they knew each other since childhood. Why should I care? Because they knew each other for awhile? Why should I care about that? To dumb it down: How does that ENSURE a better relationship? Yes to be frank I don't know either. Knuckles had a crush on Sally since childhood, and he's with Julie-su, does that tell you anything? Does it also ring any bells that Tatiana and Sonic had something and then that went down the drain as well? Childhood bonds don't ensure a true love. So I'm sick of people using the childhood excuse. Its rather annoying.

But Sonic's never been affectionate to Mina

That's untrue, he's huged, flirted, given her romantic gestures (ex: cupping up her chin) Does that matter? Not really, and I'll explain why later.

But he's never kissed her

No, but he had some pleasure when she kissed him. Just because he was surprised doesn't mean he wasn't pleased. Pleasure was also something Mina noted was a reaction to her kissing him. She was dissapointed however, because there was so much more suprise in reaction to her kiss. SonSal fans would be shooting themselves in the foot if they Sonic's never behaved "more suprised than pleased" when affections come into play. As Sonic was petrified when Sally made a quick move to try and kiss him. Still, pretend they NEVER had any affections at all. It wouldn't matter to me one bit. A man could easily have a girlfriend, and kiss, hug, and even have sexual relations to her best friend or the city whore. Affections cannot at all prove love. So the whole "affections" arguement means nothing to me as well.

Can't people accept I like Mina more than Sally or Amy for Sonic? Its not like I'm ripping out my hair when someone disagrees with my preference, no matter how much I may disagree.

hee hee hee, Sonic the hedgehog was an idea from this woman IIRC inspiried by the adventures of her husband. After discussing the matter with other fans aware of this...it appears Sonic was bought from the family by Sega and given a physical appearance by Ohshima, the games programmed by Naka. But neither Naka or Ohshima made the storyline which would be a foundation for Sega to use nor the other universes. That credit goes to you miss Garnet, not Naka, Ohshima or any of them. I think I see now. She's the one we should be thanking. Not only for Sonic, but for many supporting cast members he has. Sonic Team will NEVER be able to be the truest form of Sonic EVER, they interpret her ideas like all others. And its not like Sega ever got detailed ideas from its truest source, because she died before she could see Sonic in a game with a storyline or anything.They added things like all others, So each is no better than the other. All universes are based off of HER. So none of the Sega oriented universes are official. None could ever be. The maker of Sonic is dead.Killed in a car crash in the 1970s. The game universe comes second, Mary's comes first.


Thus no Sonic Team isn't official.

Sonic is about 57 years old (while most only count his 13 years with Sega), his first universe established before Sega even took him. No universe will ever from what I've been told be able to to say they have the truest idea. Mary's ideas were the truest, she created the character and concept that was a foundation even for Sega itself. Unfortuneatly she died in a car crash in the 1970s, so there is no way she could team up with any group of creatives.
