SatAM and Archie

Mon Oct 11, 2004, 12:15 PM
On a pretty good SatAM site, Mike had revealed how the storylines (for SatAM and Archie) are in fact tied to Sonic Team.

It appears that SatAM and Archie were a joint collaboration between SoA, DiC and Sonic Team.

Key word: Sonic Team.

together, they made a world, a storyline, profiles and basically the foundational story. So, Archie and SatAM are both in a sense Sonic Team universes. Thus purists still have no reason to leap for joy.

Another pet peeve of mine:

"Mina is copywritten to Archie"

"Sally is copywritten to DiC"

"Amy/Sonic/Knuckles is copywritten to Sega"

No offense to people who do this, but initially this was done to establish some sort of rank amongst characters. Which was closest to being a Sega character, and I find it quite stupid. Ask any Archie writer if they'll take your fanfic or comic and display it and they'll tell you no.

Why? Because Sega would take rights to it all. ANY character in the comics for instance have rights taken to Sega. The writers answer to these guys, and the characters are theirs. Sally, Mina and any other non game character have their copyrights to SEGA, not their comic's publishing company.

Blah, quickly typed something in my head up. Its sort of funny. How people segregate characters and such. Much like racism and stuff. I suppose if it can happen with cartoons, people have no reason to wonder how mankind finds their way in doing it in real life.

I've actually seen several people who put copyright to both Sega and Archie/DiC/whoever for such. Primarily these are people who deal in SatAM, and don't bother asking me what that means. I don't know.

I think, though, that you might be making a mountain out of a molehill. Both simple ignorance (of which we have plenty lying around, and you've pointed that out yourself before) and laziness in not wanting to list all the parties with rights to the characters can account for the behavior of the folks writing their disclaimers.
While Sega could technically take the rights to Sally or Bunnie away from Archie and DiC, they haven't done so, and until they do, Sega, DiC, and Archie all have legal rights to the characters. So if you wanted to be complete, you would have to list them all in your disclaimer. And that would require sorting your disclaimer out into several different groups: Sega and Archie and Dic, Sega and Archie, Sega only, and so on. Which most people aren't willing to do.

You'll have to forgive me, it's just that I remember Sailor Moon as being about inflicting severe beatdown on extradimensional lunatics.

The last fan of the Sailor Moon dub. Fear me.

In the end, Sega wins. This also makes it fairly easy for Sega to translate the characters from Archie and SatAM to the games, but I guess no one likes that idea.

^On the same token, it would also make it fairly easy to use Fleetway characters in games. But again, that would be alienating those who aren't familiar with the characters.

I think comparing it to racism may be going a bit over the top. But that's just me.

I don't think I understand the copyright thing..I never really put much thought into it..
